10 winter activities for kids

The winter blues can be challenging, and having little ones to occupy can make the period even more so. We’ve put together a list of 10 cheap winter activities which can be used to occupy your kids at home.

1. Build a den

Firstly, the the top-tier childhood memory: building a den. So simple and costs absolutely nothing, but your little ones will love it! Grab a selection of blankets and sheets and find some large objects - tall enough to crawl underneath - which the blankets and sheets can be draped over. Find as many pillows and cushions as you can to create the ultimate comfort zone.

To go the extra mile in making the den super special, find some fairy lights to create that magical feeling for your little ones to enjoy.

2. Home cinema

Home movie night, anyone? Again, a fun indoor activity for kids that costs next to nothing (if not nothing at all). If you want to be really authentic, you could use a projector to create the big-screen, cinema effect and purchase some popcorn buckets for the film snacks. However, a simple Netflix film, whilst cuddling up on the sofa with some sweet treats would do the trick.

3. Go swimming

All kids are water babies, aren’t they?

Winter activities for kids don’t only have to mean being cooped up inside... taking your little one(s) to the local leisure centre for a swimming session can be just as effective. And even better, it may even tire them out for when you get home!

4. Indoor treasure hunt

A little more time consuming, but certainly worth it once you get to see the smile on your children’s faces!

Gather a selection of sweets/treats and hide them in various spots around the house. Draw up a treasure map on a sheet of paper and place arrows around the house to point your little one(s) in the right direction. And off they go!

5. Classic board games

This one doesn’t require much explanation. We know you have a stash of board games, probably collecting dust, in your house somewhere. Why not put these to good use? Family board game evenings can be a great way to occupy your kids at home. One of the timeless winter activities; perfect for a rainy day.

6. Go outside

“There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” - Alfred Wainwright.

We tend to shy away from going outside in the cold, but getting some fresh air in the winter months can be surprisingly revitalising. Not only is fresh air good for our mental health, but it boasts many physical benefits too. These benefits include strengthening our immune systems, improving our blood pressure/heart rate and being good for our digestive systems.

7. Go bowling

Another crowd pleaser, is bowling.

Hide away from the cold whilst encouraging your children to embrace their competitive side with a game of bowling. Whilst at the bowling alley, if you want to make a day of it then treat yourself and your little ones to some party food and arcade games.

8. Home spa day

Not only is this a good winter activity for kids, but it has many health benefits too - win win! You can either go down the conventional route of buying some face masks at a small cost from your local Boots, or get creative and make your own!

Mashed up bananas work a treat (although not the most glamorous accessory).

9. Homemade pizza evening

Ciao!

Pizza making is ALWAYS a winner with the little ones. Whether you decide to make the bases from scratch or buy some pre-prepared from the supermarket, allow your kids to be chefs for the evening with a selection of pizza toppings and sauces.

Transport your family to Italy for the day by sticking on some traditional Italian music to enjoy whilst you chef it up!

10. Make friendship bracelets

Not only is this a fun indoor activity for kids, but its super cute. All you need is some something stringy (e.g. thread, elastic or ribbon etc) and a variety of beads to create the most thoughtful homemade friendship bracelet.

These can act as the perfect gift, so why not task your children with the idea of making a friendship bracelet for their best friend’s Christmas present, or a family member even?
